Folding Survival Knives

Sure they aren't as strong as a good, full blade survival knife, but they do deserve at least a mention here.  In some circumstances I might not always be feasible to carry a large survival knife, but a folding survival knife can certainly be a great alternative.  A folding survival knife is much smaller and can easily fit in a pocket and they can be purchased for a fairly reasonable price.  Unfortunately, because of the folding mechanism, there is always the chance that they will fail when you need them the most.  Both Ka-Bar and SOG make some pretty good folding survival knives.

Wilderness Survival

wildernessFor any avid outdoorsman, hiker or hunter, getting lost in the wilderness is a very real fear.  Often you will find that no one thinks that they will be the one to get lost in the wilderness,  but it does happen.  Being prepared and knowing what to do in any situation is important, but you must learn the skills before you ever leave your house.  Not knowing some simple wilderness survival tips could prove to be fatal.

Unfortunately, over the past 100-150 years, many of the basic survival skills that were used on a daily basis have been forgotten as technology makes our lives much easier.  Finding food, shelter, fire and water were just everyday activities that we no longer know how to do without our modern conveniences.

If you ever find yourself far from civilization and lost in the wilderness, there are 4 main things that one must be concerned about that will affect your survival.

1.  Water

Water is the most important part of surviving in the wilderness and having clean water to drink will significantly improve your chances of surviving in the wilderness.

2.  Staying Warm

First and foremost, fire is your best friend when you're in the wilderness.  You can use it to keep warm, dry your clothes, cook and to protect yourself from wild animals.

3. Food

Face it; We need to eat on a fairly regular basis, but what do you eat when you are in the wilderness and have nothing to eat? A person can go without for for a couple of weeks, but it could affect your mental state, your body temperature and overall health, so it's important to know what you can eat if you find yourself in a survival situation.

4. Shelter

Part of staying warm and keeping out the elements requires that you build some kind of shelter. You will need shelter in order to sleep as well. Sleep is critical to maintain a healthy state of mind.

The Ultimate Survival Knife

Whether on an intended trip in the wilderness or forced into a survival situation due to unforeseen circumstances, having the ultimate survival knife is important. While many knives are "good", only few can be called the "ultimate survival knife".

So what are the characteristics of the Ultimate Survival Knife? There are many different views on this. Some things to look at would be definitely a full tang blade and fairly thick steel. A serrated edge may or may not be necessary, but remember that they are harder to sharpen.

It may be tempting to buy a knife stuffed full of all kinds of survival gear in the handle, but many of these knives are cheaply built. Some are good quality, but many are not.
